Eco Weekend Round-up: Nov 6th, 2010

What to Wear:
Boot season is definitely here and we are onto a super cool eco brand out of the UK called Po-Zu.  As our favorite fashionable male, Brian, wrote in a recent AskHim blog, Uggs are still all the rage and are the perfect pairing for a casual day around town.  But, we are thinking of trading in those Uggs for Po-Zu Piper Tans which, not only are a lot more stylish than those standard brown suede boots, but are also organically tanned with vegetable extracts.  Oh and did we also mention that they give 3% of each purchase to the charity of your choice??  If that doesn't get your feel good shopaholic hearts racing then we don't know what will :D

What to Check Out:

Tired of paying $250 for a mediocre hair cut??  Yeah so were we - so we hopped on the 6 train to Union Square to check out the Carsten Aveda Institute.  For $19 you get a wash, hair cut, blow dry, scalp massage and hand massage.  Apart from all of this, they also use all Aveda products which are composed of naturally derived ingredients.  Make your appt today at the 22 East 17th Street!

What to Eat:
Did you know how many amazing nutrients are in pumpkins?  Better yet, did you know how tasty pumpkin seeds can be?  Check out this awesome recipe from Emeril Lagasse for some delicious roasted pumpkin seeds with a spicy kick.  We made them and now are a bit addicted to this yummy snack ;)

Kicking it up a notch with Emeril's spicy pumpkin seed recipe

 News from C. Mar:

Keep it real & keep it eco chic ;)

Weekly Eco Fashion Wrap Up October 8th, 2010

Before we kick off our fabulous week in review, by new eco chic CMar blogger, Krystal Williams, we thought we would finally announce the Winner of our London Chic Vocab Contest!  Lucky for us, we have a resident fashion forward Brit, Ajay Nayyar, on board at c. marchuska.  Ajay looked through all of your awesome response, but quickly assured us that we Americans actually call the accessory in debate the same word used by our English brethren....yup that is right ladies and gents....Brits actually call scarves the same thing we, bold and sometimes brash, Americans call them....scarves!  Somewhat a bit of a trick contest question, but still we think it stirred up some interesting debates on London fashion vocab ;)  Now, for the real moment we have all been waiting for.....drum roll please!!!!!  The winner of one NYC made, super soft, super sexy and totally eco c. marchuska hunter scarf is.....Derek Sanderoff! Congratulations Derek and thank you for participating and of course, thank you for your support!  Alright, let me hand it over to Krystal...

Greetings, Fashion People! It’s Krystal with the Week in Review.  Things have been heating up this week in the Ecosphere. Check out our fav picks of the week!

From May 26-Nov 13, the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology will be showcasing ecofashion of today and yesterday.  Ecofashion is often linked to the environmentalist movement and the hippie culture of the 1960’s, but rarely are fashionably eco-friendly styles before the mid-twentieth century discussed.  This exhibition explores the ways in which the value of clothing has transformed in the past 200 years, putting into historical context of today’s eco-fashion movement.

For more info about this exhibition check out FIT’s website at www.fitnyc.edu.

Issey Miyake’s 132 5 Eco-Friendly Collection

The buzz on eco-fashion has been on high recently in the fashion world, but revolutionary Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake has taken things to a whole new level with the release of his innovative, origami inspired 132 5 Collection.  What is the story behind the name you ask? One piece of clothe with a three dimensional shape that folds into a two dimensional shape.  The space equates to the time that it takes from completion of the garment to the moment when someone puts it on and the five is equivalent to the number of permutations for each piece.  Here at CMar this all adds up to 100 percent eco-fantastic!

Some things I’d like to highlight before I let everyone get back to their fabulous weekends:

Eco Lover and Project Runway contestant Gretchen Jones is having a giveaway for a Pearl Crescent blouse.  According to the EcoSalon website, “Her Pearl Crescent blouse is made from low impact, hand dyed, locally sourced silk and is versatile enough to wear with pencil skirts and heels or torn jeans and sneakers.” Go here for a chance to enter to win the blouse.

Weekly Eco-Fashion Update June 25th

It's time for the weekly wrap-up!

Retail: Rent Maternity Wear is a new online business established for every pregnant woman who wants to look great for the fancy occasion, but doesn't see a point in spending $$ to buy a special look that she probably can never wear again. This is SUPER eco-friendly - think about all the material/production that can be saved AND it'll save you space in your closet!

Have you guys seen Sex and the City 2 yet? Samantha is seen sporting an eco-friendly "up-cycled" Ecoist Silver Mega handbag! It's great to know that eco-fashion is making its way into media!

eBay Canada announced a partnership with Canadian designer Preloved to introduce a collection of eco-friendly clothing available exclusively on eBay.ca beginning in Fall 2010.

Blogosphere: There's designer mannequins on the street in NYC! These mannequins are dressed in duds made entirely with local materials in New York City's Garment District as part of Sidewalk Catwalk, an awesome new public art and fashion exhibit, available all summer until September 3rd. Read the full story over on TreeHugger.

OneWed, a superb bridal blog, has written a feature on eco-friendly bridal shoes! From the likes of Terra Plana, Charmone, Stella McCartney, and olsenHaus, there are quite a few pairs of sustainable dress shoes available!

c. marchuska: Did you get a chance to read our interview with jewelry designer DLC Brooklyn? I love these designs and each piece is created from vintage chains deconstructed and reconfigured!

Have an awesome weekend! :)

Weekly Eco-Fashion Wrap-Up June 18th

TGIF!! What a week! Anybody watching the World Cup? How about the NBA Finals with the Lakers & Celtics? It's been a pretty exciting week, and it was so in the eco-fashion world too.

Retail: Found via Eco Fashion World, the British fashion industry is organizing a campaign calling for businesses which operate ethical fashion policies to be rewarded with tax breaks. The campaign is supported by Vivienne Westwood, Monsoon, and Edun. I suppose this would make sense right? In the US, businesses and homeowners currently get tax credits if they apply energy efficient items...so why not apply it to the fashion industry too?

Brigitte Bardot, actress and animal-advocate, made headlines this week by teaming up with Lancel (a leather goods company!) to create an eco-friendly, cruelty-free handbag.

Melissa, a Brazilian shoe company, is taking its recycled plastic designs to new heights by collaborating with the likes of Jean Paul Gaultier and Vivienne Westwood. All of Melissa shoes are made out of MELFLEX plastic, which is hypo-allergenic, cruelty-free, void of animal products, and recyclable. Read more about it here!

Blogosphere: Muse magazine is featuring 3 eco-loving supermodels who have contributed to help save the World by going green.  How hot are these covers?!

c. marchuska: Go read our interview with tomate d'epingles, an awesome eco-friendly jewelry collection designed by some chic canadian gals!

Weekly Eco-Fashion Wrap-Up June 4th

Hi all! Welcome to summer! The weather in NYC has been fabulous, and I can't wait to take out my swimsuits and head to the beach! To prep you for some fun eco-friendly summer wear, let's begin our weekly wrap-up!

Retail: For awesome bikinis, you gotta check out the fun eco-friendly swimwear article over at Magnifeco. My favorite has to be the Lalesso swimsuits that use the traditional attire of the Swahilli women of East Africa as a trademark for their designs. The brand was created to help create employment in Africa, and all of the eco and ethical production is handled in Kenya by SOKO. Running at just £32.00, they're quite a steal and they can be shipped anywhere! :)

For other eco-friendly summer must-haves, check out Marie Claire's list of top 11 favorites, including these nautical striped Toms.

For some flirty summer dresses, the newest queen of "upcycled" fashion has to be Lena Santana. According to Magnifeco, this Brazilian genius takes fabrics from second-hand shops, car boot sales, and charity shops, and then recycles these fabrics into new contemporary designs. I absolutely love this White Lace Straps Dress - it's just so chic!

Blogosphere: I've never been a huge sports person, but I know that June means...NBA playoffs and even more importantly for the rest of the world - the World Cup. This year, Team USA will be outfitted in Nike jerseys that have been specially manufactured from discarded water bottles found in the landfills of Japan and Taiwan. It looks like the eco-friendly philosophy is finally moving into the sports arena!

Want to know where and how your clothes were really made? According to the StyleGourmand new BBC documentary series called "Blood, Sweat, and T-Shirts" follows six young people as they work in the factories where many of their beloved fast fashion garments are made. It'll answer your questions about "how is it possible to make clothes for so cheap and still make a profit?" and "am I a fashion sell-out?" Go watch it - it'll inspired you!

c. marchuska: Go read up on our latest interview with an inspiring fashion designer - this time it's with JoAnn Berman, one of our co-exhibitors from the EcoLuxe Pop-Up shop. I'm told that she designed quite a few outfits for Rihanna!

Also, go check out our Roli Hoodie - it's the newest to our collection :)

H&M 'Fashion Against Aids' collection has collaborated with Edun Yooxgen to create a new line of slogan tees. Katy Perry is the spokesperson and this year's campaign donates 25% of the full sales price of each item to four organizations fighting HIV/AIDS among young people.

I'm pretty excited to have found this new eco-friendly yogawear brand called Prancing Leopard. They make some amazing workout gear that is actually STYLISH and because their gear is 95-100% organic turkish cotton - it feels uber soft too :)

She Bible necklace: yarn never looked so dam sexy! This beautiful creation by Nixxi creates the perfect architect touch for any springtime wardrobe

Hemp chic clothes launch designer Virdis Luxe into eco fashion glory

A time old material, hemp is not normally lumped into the category of luxurious. But Virdis Luxe have crafted sweaters, skirts, wraps, and tunics from silken hemp that make you fall in love with this traditional fabric.

Our Earth uninhabitable by 2300? Another reason sustainable fashion isn’t just a trend!

We have all heard and know the debates around climate change, but current research from the Universities of New South Wales and Purdue predicts a dooms outlook for future generations if current trends in consumption aren’t changed. In fact, more than half of the planet is projected to be inhabitable in three centuries! Keep rocking those eco friendly frocks and you could help keep this planet cool and sustainable :)

Have a great weekend everyone!
